MANTIGUE ISLAND
Camiguin
It’s an island in Camiguin 3 kilometers off the shore of San Roque . It’s a 30 min boat ride from San Roque to Mantique. Jackie and Erlyn had their “photo opps” (as we call it) in the island. They don’t want to miss the wonderful view and the crystal like sand. Jason went on snorkeling with Manong boat driver ( I cant remember his name, sorry) while I am busy taking pictures of the views and the wonderful beach of Mantique. After about 2 hours, we left the island where we met manong boat driver’s son, Kuya Rudy, he's a teacher in the island. He’s one of the very dedicated teachers I’ve met in my life. I’ve learned so much from him as he tells his story. He grew up in the island and graduated from college because of his father’s dedication and hard work as a fisherman. When he graduated from college, he chose to teach the children in the island because most of them don’t have the means to study in the town proper because it’ll take them 30 min boat ride from the island to the town proper. It was a challenge for kuya Rudy when he started teaching in the island because he and his father need to get up and prepare to go work as early as early 3am. They don’t have a motor boat then that time and it takes more than an hour for them to reach the island using a banca. There are more than 200 families in the island. On our way back to San Roque, I felt sad when I saw the school where he spends all his time teaching the children in the island. The school is made of nipa huts and one part of the school was destroyed by the typhoon. He mentioned that they've requested funds for the restoration of the school and yet until now, no actions have been taken.
